New York City School Districts
The New York City public school system is the largest school system in the country,
with a student population of nearly 1.1 million, a budget in excess of $9 billion and more
than 1,574 facilities. Its policy-making body is the seven-member Board of Education,
comprised of two mayoral appointees and one appointee selected by each of the five borough
presidents. Responsibility for the day-to-day administration of the schools is vested in
the Chancellor, who is selected by the Board.
